Help your Red Level beginner students practice reading equine behavior during every interaction they have with a horse.
You may simply be able to work some review into every lesson you teach until students demonstrate a satisfactory depth of knowledge. However, we highly recommend teaching at least one lesson devoted solely to this topic, even for students enrolled in traditional riding lessons.
Lessons cover:
- the benefits of increased understanding and empathy for our equine partners.
- interpreting basic equine communication, including ear and tail position, posture, and facial expression.
- identifying possible stress signals, which can include calming signals and displacement behaviors.
- the importance of using context when evaluating a horse’s behavior.
Teaching tips include:
- creative ideas for teaching this topic with both private and group lessons.
- suggested Challenge materials (games, worksheets, etc.) and other teaching tools.
- strategies for adapting for your unique teaching situation.
