Quadrille Camp Lesson Plans

Learning Levels Downloads

Helpful information about this resource:

Use this set of three Horsemanship lesson plans to introduce students to the art of riding in formation. While we use them to teach drillwork skills at the beginning of our popular Quadrille Camp, you could also incorporate them into riding lessons or club meetings for regular students.

The set starts with an introduction that covers important prerequisites and tips for conducting these lessons safely. It then inludes the following 2-page lesson plans, each covering a specific aspect of formation riding:

  • GET IN LINE teaches awareness of spacing and alignment. Students ride in two separate columns, working up to a Thread the Needle maneuver.
  • STICK TOGETHER challenges students to remain aligned while riding abreast through a series of increasingly complex exercises, starting with ring figures in pairs and working up to a full Pinwheel.
  • IN SYNC emphasizes the importance of synchrony as students practice turns, obliques and circles.

NOTE: These lesson plans assume that you, as the instructor, have previous experience with quadrille or drill team, and that you can comfortably explain common maneuvers and terminology.

You’ll also find helpful information in our Quadrille Camp Organizer’s Guide and a printable set of Quadrille Camp Handouts.

We’ve been blessed with many talented photographers over the years: students who voluntarily stood in sweltering/ freezing arenas, capturing lifelong memories of lessons, camps and shows. We’re grateful to all of them!

One former student, Delaney Witbrod, is now a professional photographer with a gift for animal portraits – see more of her fine work here. We’re also grateful for photos of Western riding donated by LLPro instructors – particularly Bit of Pleasure Horse School and Joyful Hearts Photography!

You’ll find illustrations throughout our online courses and printed materials graciously donated by our friend Rhonda Hagy. Evan Surrusco contributes additional illustrations and handles most of our photo processing. Contact us for information about their work.
