Helpful information about this resource:

Use this teaching guide for unmounted Teal HorseSense lessons that teach the principles of basic jump course design.

We require Teal Level students to design hunter, equitation, and show jumping courses – but you can use any discipline to help students learn safe, intelligent jumping exercises for their own horse in the future.

Lessons cover:

  • course design specifications for distances, typical fence types, and fence heights
  • course math: stride lengths, jumping mechanics, appropriate distances for lines and combinations
  • designing for the course context

Teaching tips include:

  • creative ideas for teaching this topic with both private and group lessons
  • suggested Challenge materials (games, worksheets, etc.) and other teaching tools
  • strategies for adapting for your unique teaching situation

We’ve been blessed with many talented photographers over the years: students who voluntarily stood in sweltering/ freezing arenas, capturing lifelong memories of lessons, camps and shows. We’re grateful to all of them!

One former student, Delaney Witbrod, is now a professional photographer with a gift for animal portraits – see more of her fine work here. We’re also grateful for photos of Western riding donated by LLPro instructors – particularly Bit of Pleasure Horse School and Joyful Hearts Photography!

You’ll find illustrations throughout our online courses and printed materials graciously donated by our friend Rhonda Hagy. Evan Surrusco contributes additional illustrations and handles most of our photo processing. Contact us for information about their work.
