This is the comprehensive set of mounted lesson plans for Green Level Horsemanship in the Learning Levels equine curriculum, containing 22 lessons for beginner Western riders, with suggestions for modifications.
This Level encourages increased independence while teaching students to consider their influence on the horse and their responsibility for the horse’s welfare.
The lessons shared here have all been used in our riding school and can be adapted to suit students of any age.
What’s included in the Green Level Horsemanship plans?
- An introduction to teaching Green Horsemanship.

- Mounted skills include: efficient and self-directed ground handling and tacking up; warm up and cool down with awareness of conditions; rating horse’s speed at walk and jog; riding the lope along the rail, through large circles, and over a single pole; awareness of posting diagonals and leads; riding without stirrups and bareback at walk and jog; balanced and secure position over ground poles.
