Fractured Pony Tales – Red Level HorseSense

Learning Levels Downloads

Helpful information about this resource:

Students write a short story using every equine term in the attached word bank. Younger Red Level students should have assistance as required – but the story should be in their own words.

This activity originated as a group activity for summer day camps, so it’s ideal for unmounted lessons. Small groups of 2-4 students can collaborate on their story. It could also be used as a horsey homework assignment for individual students.

Our only rule: the story should illustrate a clear understanding of the terms that are used.

When students read their story aloud, you have the opportunity to discuss misunderstood terms. Just make sure to keep things lighthearted and enjoyable.

All of the terminology is taken directly from the detailed information in our student study guides: in this case, the Red Level HorseSense Study Guide.

You can also create your own custom list. Just copy and paste the list into a new document and edit.

We’ve been blessed with many talented photographers over the years: students who voluntarily stood in sweltering/ freezing arenas, capturing lifelong memories of lessons, camps and shows. We’re grateful to all of them!

One former student, Delaney Witbrod, is now a professional photographer with a gift for animal portraits – see more of her fine work here. We’re also grateful for photos of Western riding donated by LLPro instructors – particularly Bit of Pleasure Horse School and Joyful Hearts Photography!

You’ll find illustrations throughout our online courses and printed materials graciously donated by our friend Rhonda Hagy. Evan Surrusco contributes additional illustrations and handles most of our photo processing. Contact us for information about their work.
