Use this teaching guide for unmounted lessons to help your students transition into the role of trainer, thinking critically about how their longeing practice can make a positive difference to the horse and their partnership.
We expect Purple HorseSense students to be developing an eye for a horse’s balance and posture, with an understanding of how healthy biomechanics can affect the horse’s comfort, rideability and soundness. We also expect them to be comfortable enough with groundwork that they can work a horse on line with their attention fully on improving communication and the horse’s way of going – not on handling the line without dropping it!
Lessons cover:
- using photos and videos to acquire an educated eye for equine movement
- tips for developing verbal evaluation skills
- structuring a ground training workout, including an appropriate warm-up, cool down and targeted exercises designed to address each horse’s individual needs
- making informed decisions about longeing devices (side reins, etc.)
Teaching tips include:
- creative ideas for teaching this topic with both private and group lessons
- suggested Challenge materials (games, worksheets, etc.) and other teaching tools
- strategies for adapting for your unique teaching situation
