Use this teaching guide for unmounted HorseSense lessons that teach your Orange Level students to correctly and safely bandage a horse’s hoof.
If a horse punctures a foot, or loses a shoe and a big piece of hoof wall with it, students should feel confident in their ability to apply a hoof bandage — even if no one is available to help.
The goal is to have students confidently create a hoof wrap that is secure enough to survive a day of normal turnout.
Lessons cover:
- different reasons why a horse might need a hoof wrap
- pros and cons of soaking the hoof and using poultices or drawing salves
- choosing the right materials for a specific bandaging job, including emergecy situations
- basic techniques for wrapping the hoof while keeping the horse comfortable and supported
- tips for creating hoof bandage practice sessions
- using proactive HorseCentered training to make the process safer and easier
Teaching tips include:
- creative ideas for teaching this topic with both private and group lessons
- suggested Challenge materials (games, worksheets, etc.) and other teaching tools
- strategies for adapting for your unique teaching situation
